This and that..
This post is just going to be a mish-mash because I have a few things I wanted to write about and none of them are related. So here goes....
First topic...
Did I miss a month? Because only a week or so ago, there was snow on the ground! And this weekend it was 80! EIGHTY! Crazy warm! But oh it felt wonderful. Even the rest of this week is supposed to be sunny and 70's. But aren't we supposed to have April showers? We are getting to the point where we could use a good rain. A little dusty in our little world right now.
My hubby and I also had a date night over the weekend. It was so nice, especially because we were able to eat at a little casual spot with a big outdoor dining area. I love eating outside, feeling the nice breeze, enjoying my glass of wine, and watching the people go by.
Next topic....
Gas prices! HOLY Cow! This is crazy nuts. I can't believe how much more gas costs now. With no end in sight.
So I have a question...what are you doing in reaction to the gas prices?
Last year, we replaced my husband's Explorer with a tiny old, high mileage Honda Civic (42 mpg!) through ebay (we don't spend much on cars). We also have a Dodge Caravan which we really need if the entire family, including Caroline's wheelchair, needs to go somewhere. But 95% (or more) of our driving is without the family so the Civic is always used. We have already paid for this car in the gas savings. We probably save $100 a month in gas. Gotta love the Civy!!!!
But it is enough? I don't know. We are still going on a beach vacation, although the cost of the drive is scaring the heck out of me (obviously we are taking the van). We also just drive less, consolidate trips etc..
But with the rising prices, over time people are going to have to consider BIG changes to their lifestyles.
Like moving closer to work/shopping/family - or wherever you drive the most.
Or starting to realize that you really do not need a big F250 truck, or a 4 wd SUV. My BIL still honestly thinks he can't live without his big truck. And he is in sales and spends $75 every other day filling it up. He is one of those people who wouldn't be caught dead driving a Civic.....don't get it....
Are people going to start moving away from the suburbs? Are we finally going to start constructing communities where people are encouraged to walk or bike? Are we finally going to be a country full of tiny Smart cars and bicycles like Europe?
Honestly, it may be a very positive result from this mess.
We have constructed millions of homes in communities that are only accessible by car. Kids can ride their bikes around their streets, but then they (and their parents) jump in the car if they want to go anywhere else. And then we complain that we have an obesity problem in this country so we DRIVE our kids to their organized sporting events! Crazy.
I keep thinking that as much as I love being in the country, maybe someday we may have to consider moving into the city.
And maybe the malls/Walmarts/big shopping centers in this country will actually start adding sidewalks so we can WALK to the store without having to scale a fence or trudge through a drainage ditch. I am still considering writing to Walmart about their newest store in our area where the people who literally live next door, cannot walk.
Last topic...
Not really a topic, just a couple cute pictures from the weekend:
Christina enjoying the weather this weekend after some Photoshopping to brighten/BW and remove the chocolate that was all through her teeth! I love this picture!
And Nugget in her favorite summertime sleeping spot. She loves to sleep under bushes in the mulch. But if you know cats, you can see by her ears that she knows I am nearby her. She is not completely relaxed.
Have a great week!!!

Mark and I had a spontaneous date night Friday night. It was nice. Not as nice weather-wise, as yours was. It was raining here, but it was still good to have some one-on-one time. We have too little of that.
The gas prices are seriously scary. I find myself combining multiple errands into a single trip and rethinking the necessity of certain excursions. If worse comes to worst, I might have to consider taking the bus to work. Things would have to get pretty bad before I'll do that though. Carpooling may be an option.
Our civic is about to die. I think we are going to replace it with another one, or something similar. But, it is not reliable enough for the family anymore.
Interesting point about something good coming out of the inflated gas prices. I have been consolidating trips for a couple of years or more. I plan my daily/weekly route and add as many stops as possible. I truly believe that has saved some $$$. A few weeks ago I mapped out 10 stops on a Sunday afternoon. The exercise we could all use by walking more is also great! As for driving a Civic, I want mine back. What great cars and the cost of gas is so much less. Hybrids are another option. I have heard great things about the Hondas. There are two problems with the Honda Hybrids: one, the cost; two there are still some bugs that need to be worked out since they are newer. It's funny how I was always warned as a kid to not waste things, now I'm starting to understand why. Another issue is recycling. I wish I could remember the amount of years it takes for certain things (Ex. baby diapers, cig butts or glass jars) to disintegrate. It was amazed at how many thousands of years, in some cases, and maybe more. Go Green!
Glad you were able to enjoy a date night!
I know what you mean about gas. It's one of our biggest monthly expenses and there's nothing to do about it. Hubby is working at the closest hospital already. If we didn't live so far out I wouldn't hesitate to take the horse and buggy. He needs exercise as well! But we can't move because we have land off the farm and it's sentimental to me as well as would insult my parents if we sold. Oh, the tangled web we've weaved!
We're a two SUV family and I hate it. But, we can't seem to agree on a car and don't really want to take on another payment anyway. *sigh*
The photo of Christina is STUNNING! She's a gorgeous little kid.
So glad you had a nice date night. It is so much fun to eat outside. I agree with you aout the gas issue, it's crazy. And that photo of Christina is so pretty.
Gee Irene, you must have been reading my mind about gas prices. I have a F150 as my only vehicle and wonder about getting something smaller. But it's so nice to have for hauling.... And to have a second vehicle and pay additional insurance doesn't make a lot of sense either. What's a person to do?
I live out in the boonies, so the closest place I can walk to is actually a gas station - which I guess defeats the purpose :)
I'm getting appalled by the gas prices, too, but I haven't consciously changed what I do. I'm lucky in that I work from home all but one day a week, so my driving is far more limited than most people's. I also have an 11 year old Explorer that I need to replace but can't decide on a good option. With 2 kids (and their friends and my parents living 15 minutes away and wanting to do stuff with us), I need a somewhat decent sized car, but ... yuck!
Eating/drinking outside is one of my favorite activities on earth (all of my favorite activities ironically involve eating).
My husband drives a beater (92 Accord) that gets about 30 mpg and I drive my minivan that gets about 22-24. I try to stay within the confines of my town most days instead of heading south to the city like I did when gas was at $1.49/gallon. Those were the days.
My husband traded in his Honda Pilot for a Honda Accord. He drives more than I do since I'm home during the day. Like you, I have a van. It's better than an SUV on gas, though.
Love the pictures!
